How deep are the posts set?

6' tall fences have posts set at a minimum of 2 feet deep and 8' tall fences are set a minimum of 2.5 feet deep. The important question is how the concrete is prepared. You can set a post 3.5 feed deep, but if the concrete is not mixed correctly you'll be able to pull it up or watch it bend over next season.

How is the concrete mixed?

Duck Fence & Deck mixes all concrete before pouring it into the post holes. We chase out all air bubbles before setting.

How far apart are the posts set?

6' tall fences have posts set 8' apart and 8' tall fences have posts set 6' apart.

What size nails are used on board-on-board fences?

Duck fence does not use nails. Over time, nailed planks tend to slide out and expose loose boards. People end up repairing this problem by using screws. We use ceramic coated screws when we build your fence. Screws are torqued in and will not come loose. This also makes small repairs such as replacing a damaged board easier to do.

What grades of pickets are used?

Duck Fence & Deck only uses #1 Grade or Clear Cedar or #1 Grade Spruce.

What size framing is being installed?

Since Spruce is a less inexpensive fence, we use 2x3's to frame Spruce fences. All Cedar fences are framed with Cedar 2x4's. Duck Fence does NOT use pressure treated 2x4's on any fence, due to the tendency they have to warp.

what size posts are installed?

Posts are very important in determining the strength of a fence. Duck fence & Deck uses only .095 galvanized steel posts which is the heaviest grade post, regardless of the height of the fence you pick. The use of weaker .065 and .080 posts can result in the posts bending in high winds.

How much of an overlap is used for a board-on-board fence?

Duck Fence & Deck overlaps each picket approximately 1" on each side of the picket. Board-on-board fences are installed for total privacy, if the pickets are overlapped any less than 1", sun cracks are very likely to occur, which reduces the expected privacy.

Do you recommend staining your fences?

Duck Fence highly recommends staining all Spruce fences. Spruce is a less expensive wood and needs stain to help extend its longevity. Cedar does not need to be stained; however, it will turn grey. Cedar has a natural sap to the wood and if built correctly Cedar fences can last 20-25 years. Staining Cedar has a very beautiful effect; however stain will need to be re-applied every 3-6 years.

Do you pre-dip your wood or stain after installation?

Pre-dipping wood ensures deeper penetration than spraying. Duck Fence & Deck has your lumber pre-dipped prior to construction. The advantages of pre-dipping are as follows:

How do you pre-dip your wood?

Some companies dip their wood in inferior stain, so be sure to ask what brand they use. Duck Fence & Deck uses a 100% pure oil base commercial grade stain from Ready Seal. This specially formulated penetrating oil contains:

The longevity and deep penetration of the oil helps extend the woods life and prevents cracking, warping and splitting of your fence. This stain has been tested and recommended by the Texas Forest Service.
