Decks

Decks are a great way to accent your home as well as allowing you more square footage to entertain friends and family. Today there are more choices in deck materials than ever before. These choices are pressure treated lumber, Cedar/Redwood, EPI, vinyl, and composites.

Pressure treating is a process performed on inexpensive Spruce wood. You will notice it by its characteristic green color. Although pressure treated is the least expensive of the choices, it will leave you with plenty of work re-staining and replacing split and warped boards.

Cedar and Redwood create the beautiful decks that you see in most magazines. Living in Texas, you will still have to spend time re-staining a Redwood deck on a regular basis.

Epi is the new undicovered jewel of decking. This is a specialty wood that comes from Brazil. It has the density rating of concrete and will last 35 years without rotting or infestation of bugs. The lumber will still turn grey within 4 to 6 months but leaves your home with a beautiful look that does not need any maintenance. This is my personal favorite to use when building decks.

Composite decking is a mixture of wood product and plastic product that provides you with a 35 year longevity. Composite decking has become tremendously popular in the past few years. This is the most popular decking for boat ramps and docks or areas that have a drastic climate change.

Vinyl or plastic decks have a tendency to look plastic and fake. Duck Fence does not build using vinyl.
